Greater Fort Lauderdale: Spring Break Makeover Story

What started out as an innocent "Frankie and Annette" annual event in the fifties and sixties, evolved into a million dollar phenomenon that filled a sleepy sun-filled beach community into a roaring party haven. Fort Lauderdale is no longer "where the boys are," but where well-heeled Europeans, sophisticated Northerners and laid-back Mid-Westerners come to relax and vacation.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale tourism industry, which just over eighteen years ago depended heavily on the revenue produced by the annual spring break crowd, is pleased with the steady decline in springtime student visitation since 1986. In its height in 1985, spring break attracted more than 350,000 college students to Greater Fort Lauderdale. This year, less than 15,000 are expected.
